Why Bumi

What Sets the Workshop Apart

A small workshop run on honest principles. The work speaks more than the marketing does.

Assessed Individually

Every piece is looked at on its own merits. A condition report is discussed before any work begins so there are no surprises.

Appropriate Tools for the Task

Work is carried out with tools suited to each movement type. Pivot work happens under magnification. Polish compounds are graduated by hand.

Honest Lead Times

Service windows are stated clearly and not compressed to win business. A clock restored in four weeks is preferable to one rushed in two.

Original Character Kept

Dial finishes, case patina, and period-appropriate parts are preserved wherever the piece warrants it. Restoration, not conversion.

Clear Communication

Updates at each stage. If the scope of work changes, you are consulted before anything proceeds. No decisions made without your agreement.

Based in Kuching

Walk-in visits welcome at Jalan Padungan. Drop off your piece in person, ask questions, and collect when it is ready.

Questions

Common Enquiries

Straightforward answers about the workshop, the process, and what to expect.

What should I bring when I drop off a clock or watch?
Bring the piece itself, along with any original box or papers if you have them — these help with reference during assessment. If you know any history of previous repairs or servicing, that is worth mentioning too. No booking is required for a drop-off during workshop hours.
How long does wall clock restoration take?
The service window for wall clock restoration typically runs four to ten weeks, depending on the extent of case work and any parts that need sourcing. A more specific estimate is given once the piece has been assessed. Lead times are stated honestly — we do not commit to deadlines that compromise the work.
Can every scratched crystal be polished, or are some replaced?
Most light to moderate scratches on acrylic and mineral crystals respond well to polishing. Where damage is deep enough that polishing cannot restore adequate clarity, we discuss replacement with you before proceeding. The condition is assessed first and no work begins without your agreement.
What does pivot polishing involve and why is it done?
Pivots are the slender ends of arbors that rotate within jewels or bushings in the movement. Wear causes them to become rough or slightly undersize, which increases friction and affects timekeeping. Polishing and burnishing under magnification restores the correct geometry and surface, allowing the movement to run as intended.
Do you work on antique or sentimental pieces?
Yes, and these are often the most considered commissions. The approach is to preserve original character where possible — dial finishes, period parts, and case patina are treated with care. If a piece has particular sentimental value, please mention it at drop-off so the handling reflects that.
How is pricing determined and when do I pay?
Pricing is based on the nature of the work involved. Listed prices are starting figures; the actual cost is discussed after assessment and agreed before work begins. Payment is settled on collection. Prices are in Malaysian Ringgit (RM).
