Watchmaker at work

Why Bumi

The Case for Choosing a Workshop
That Slows Down

Speed is not the measure of good repair work. Accuracy, honesty, and a clear account of what was done — these matter more, and they take longer.

What You Get

Eight Reasons to Bring Your Piece to Bumi

Trade-Trained Staff

Work carried out by people who trained specifically in watchmaking and clock mechanics, not general repair.

Assessment First, Always

No work begins without a clear assessment and agreed scope. No assumptions are made about what the piece needs.

Transparent Pricing

Starting prices are published. Final cost is agreed before work begins. No hidden additions on collection.

Restoration Over Replacement

Original components, dials, and finishes are preserved wherever the piece warrants it.

Realistic Lead Times

Timelines reflect the work involved, not what is convenient to promise. You know what to expect.

Precision Tooling

Pivot and movement work is done under magnification with appropriate specialist tools.

Client Communication

Updates at each stage. If scope changes, you are consulted before anything additional proceeds.

Walk-In Welcome

The Jalan Padungan workshop accepts drop-ins during opening hours. No appointment needed for assessment.

Expertise

Trade-Specific Knowledge Across Three Disciplines

The team at Bumi trained in specific horological disciplines rather than general electronics or repair. Suhaimi Razali handles movement servicing and pivot burnishing. Norhaida Abdullah manages case and timber work. Lim Chee Wai focuses on crystal and surface finishing. Each service is handled by the person with the appropriate background for it.

  • Watchmaking background, not general repair training
  • 12+ years of combined workshop experience
  • Familiar with Swiss, German, and Japanese movement types

"Knowing which compound to use on a mineral crystal is different from knowing which one to use on acrylic. Treating them the same way produces results that reflect the confusion."

— Bumi workshop notes
  • Assessment at drop-off — no charge, no commitment
  • Written scope and cost agreed before work starts
  • Update if any findings change the scope
  • Condition record on arrival and departure
Process

A Method That Puts Clarity Before Speed

The process at Bumi is structured around avoiding surprises — for the client and for the workpiece. Each piece is assessed before any tool is applied. The findings are shared, cost is agreed, and work proceeds only with the client's confirmation. If something changes during the work, the client is contacted before the scope is extended.

Value & Pricing

Prices That Reflect the Work Involved

Wall clock restoration starts from RM 810, crystal polishing from RM 1,450, and pivot polishing and burnishing from RM 740. These are starting figures; the specific cost for each piece is confirmed after assessment. There are no charges beyond what has been agreed. Payment is made on collection.

  • Starting prices published openly
  • Final figure confirmed before work proceeds
  • No additions without client agreement
  • Payment on collection, not upfront

Restoration cost, when weighed against the age and significance of a piece, is often considerably lower than replacement. A wall clock restored correctly at Bumi can run reliably for many years without further significant work.

Clocks returned from Bumi are regulated before handover. Movement work is checked for rate accuracy. Crystals are inspected for any compound residue. Each piece is collected in full working condition or the issue is addressed before it leaves.

Results

Work Checked Before It Leaves the Workshop

The measure of a service is how the piece performs after it is returned. Regulation checks, rate testing, and visual inspection are part of the completion process for each service at Bumi. If the outcome is not satisfactory, the piece does not leave.

How We Compare

Not all repair work is carried out the same way. This is a fair account of what distinguishes the Bumi approach.

What Only Bumi Offers

Distinctive to This Workshop

Crystal Polishing as a Primary Service

Most workshops treat crystal damage as a straightforward replacement job. Bumi offers polishing with graduated compounds as a distinct service — preserving the original crystal where clarity can be restored.

Pendulum Clock Regulation Included

Wall clock restoration at Bumi includes full regulation after reassembly. The clock leaves keeping accurate time, not simply ticking. This step is often treated as an additional charge elsewhere.

Condition Documentation at Drop-Off

The state of each piece on arrival is recorded. This provides a reference during the work and a clear account for the client on collection — a practice not common in general repair shops.

Scope Changes Require Client Agreement

If additional work is discovered during a service, the client is contacted before it is undertaken. Nothing is added to the bill without discussion and agreement in advance.
